Scottish Prison Service

The new Women’s National Facility provides a dedicated environment for the care of women and is a key example of the commitment to improving the Scottish Prison Service estate with environments that do not feel institutional or threatening. The facility will focus on therapy, education and recovery with practice, tools and services that are trauma informed.

To support this strategy, we collaborated with Morrison Construction, Holmes Miller and the facility staff at HMP Cornton Vale to develop environmental graphics creating a welcoming and nurturing environment for the women and staff.

We developed a broad theme of ‘bringing the outside in’ that makes connections to the natural world beyond the facility environment – our aim is to promote mental well-being and foster positive change. Research confirms that exposure to nature helps decrease our stress and anxiety levels – even just looking at trees and plants can help lower blood pressure and improve a person’s mood.
